Awarded through a global competition, Fifth City Commons is an innovative affordable housing development in Chicago's historic Garfield Park neighborhood on the west side. The competition sought ideas to transform 1.5 acres of city-owned vacant parcels into a sustainable development designed to mitigate climate change and spur economic revitalization while combating gentrification and ensuring that local community needs are met first.
Built to withstand climate change effects, Fifth City incorporates numerous resiliency and adaptation solutions through the power of native plants. The development includes approximately 21,500 square feet of public green space featuring a public entry plaza, rain gardens, and a planted rooftop terrace. Designed to meet Passive House standards, Fifth City generates 100% of its power and manages all stormwater on-site.
