Greenprint is part of the team selected to lead the landscape design for the expansion and modernization of Concourse D, with planning also underway for Concourse E, as part of the City of Chicago’s ORDNext program. Along with the planned O’Hare Global Terminal, these additions represent the largest concourse expansion in O'Hare's 70-year history. As Chicago's first purpose-built domestic-international code-share concourses, Concourse D is designed to accommodate different sizes of aircraft bodies, increase operational efficiency for carriers, reduce layover transfers and improve thelayover experience.
The landscape design pays homage to the apple orchard that once stood on the airport's original site. The architectural approach features a treelike structural system with branching columns that create a vaulted roof, topped by a multilevel central oculus that provides natural light. Curvilinear elements informed by Midwestern rivers flow throughout the design, complemented by interior plantings. The project prioritizes passenger experience and environmental performance. The branching structural system minimizes vertical supports to open views and improve circulation, while the building’s form and overhangs are tuned to the Midwest climate to help regulate temperature. Central skylights provide natural daylight, creating a bright, easy-to-navigate environment for travelers.
