Preserving industrial heritage while building a lakefront for future generations

Situated along Chicago's South Shore lakefront, Steelworkers Park is a 16.5-acre public green space that stands as a living tribute to the legacy of the South Chicago steelworking community. Once home to the U.S. Steel South Works complex, the site was remediated and reimagined as a passive park in 2006, and now the Chicago Park District is taking the next step in its evolution.

Greenprint developed a comprehensive Framework Plan that will serve as the guiding vision for the park's future, balancing its role as a neighborhood gathering place, a citywide destination and a historically significant stretch of public lakefront. The plan draws directly from community input, honoring resident priorities such as improved lake access for kayaks and canoes, a playground, gathering spaces, better lighting and stronger connections to the surrounding South Chicago neighborhood.

The framework addresses ecological stewardship of the park's unique slag shoreline, coordination with the adjacent Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park development and thoughtful interpretation of the site's industrial heritage. The result is a coordinated, community-driven roadmap ensuring every future investment in Steelworkers Park reflects both the people it serves and the history it honors.
