Situated in Chicago’s dynamic West Fulton Market District, 800 Fulton stands as a landmark of innovative integration between architecture and landscape. Drawing inspiration from the local ecological communities found on limestone cliffs, the design celebrates native plants and evokes the aesthetic of trees on a cliff side. Through a series of design studies in conjunction with the building facade, the landscape architect incorporated trees and understory plants to optimize the use of terrace spaces. This approach not only maximizes greenery, but also creates a lush outdoor living room experience for users, blending natural beauty with urban functionality. Leasing activities were improved by the inclusion of the outdoor spaces and south facing screening reduced energy bills.

The unique stepped design of the structure architecture creates multiple setbacks on the building’s facade providing ideal spaces for incorporating trees and plant materials. These green terraces enhance the vibrancy of the amenity spaces, offering commercial tenants opportunities to socialize or enjoy nature in solitude. The integration of lush landscape transforms the terraces into dynamic, inviting environments for all occupants. The building owner uses the landscaped terraces as a selling point to potential commercial users. The as the experience of working inside and looking over the Chicago skyline through a natural green filter is unrivaled.
